Thinking about adoption is a huge decision—one that comes with a lot of emotions, questions, and maybe even second thoughts. You might be wondering, “Can I change my mind about adoption?” The answer depends on what stage of the process you are in.

Before You Deliver

If you’re still pregnant and exploring adoption, nothing is final. You can:

  • Talk it out. Ask your adoption specialist questions, change your hospital plan, or even pause the process if you need space.
  • Explore parenting. Some people start an adoption plan, then decide they want to parent instead—and that’s okay.
  • Change your mind more than once. It’s normal to go back and forth as you think through your options.

At the Hospital

When your baby is born, you may feel emotions you weren’t expecting. You have the right to choose parenting—even if you’ve already matched with an adoptive family.

  • Nothing is permanent yet. Until you sign legal paperwork, your baby is still legally your child.
  • You set the pace. If you need more time to think, let your adoption specialist and hospital team know.
  • Support matters. Whether you place or decide to parent, you deserve nonjudgmental support.

You have a voice in the process, and your role matters.

After Signing Paperwork

This part depends on how you place your baby as defined by Texas Family Code § 161.103.

  • Through an agency (like Adoption Advocates): Once you sign the legal documents, the decision is permanent. There is no revocation period in Texas when you relinquish to an adoption agency.
  • Through a private attorney (independent adoption): Texas law gives you a 10-day revocation period, meaning you can change your mind within those 10 days.

That’s why it’s so important to understand your rights before you sign anything. Your adoption specialist or attorney should explain everything clearly.
