- Choose your own printer: Most templates can be printed through the service of your choice, allowing you to compare prices, paper options, and turnaround times.
- Easy to update later: Life changes. You might move into a new home, welcome a new pet, celebrate a new milestone, or simply want to refresh your photos. Since you own the editable file, making future updates is much easier than starting from scratch.
While a semi-DIY templates have many advantages, it’s not the best option for every family – and here’s why:
- They take more time than you might expect: Although the design work is done for you, you’ll still need to write your content, choose photos, edit everything carefully, and assemble the final book.

Choosing a template is about more than finding one that’s pretty, and I can’t stress that enough. Take a little time to envision what you want your finished profile book to feel like. I also recommend looking at other adoption profile books for inspiration; you can find many online or ask your agency to send samples.

There are a lot of templates to choose from, and this can help you narrow down your options. Ask yourself what best reflects your family. Do you prefer a:

In this case, choose one that has the right layout for your book. It is much easier to update fonts and colors than it is to create new page layouts. - Replace the placeholder photos with your own photos.
- Replace the sample text with your own story.
- But keep the overall layout intact.
Resist the Urge to Add More
I understand the temptation to go big; you have so much you want to share! But these templates are carefully balanced. When you start adding extra photos or stretching text boxes, the pages often become harder to read instead of more meaningful.
It’s tempting to:
- squeeze in a few extra paragraphs
- add several more photos
- enlarge text boxes
- rearrange page elements
- or create entirely new page layouts
In most cases, these changes make the pages feel crowded and overwhelming.
If you find that your text doesn’t fit in the space provided, it’s usually a sign that it should be shortened rather than the layout being adjusted.
Remember, expectant parents often look through multiple profile books at once, and may experience information overload. A clean layout with concise writing is usually far less overwhelming than pages packed with photos and text.
Sometimes, saying less actually allows your story to stand out more.
