How to Place a Baby Up for Adoption
Curious about how placing a baby up for adoption works? Here’s a step-by-step look at what to expect when you make an adoption plan with Adoption Advocates.
Keep in mind that you won’t make any final decisions about adoption until after you’ve delivered your baby. Until you’ve signed the relinquishment papers, you are free to change your mind about adoption. Adoption Advocates will respect your decision.
- 1
Connect with an adoption agency. Considering adoption starts with gathering information. You’ll learn what open adoption means, get answers your questions, and discuss your options.
- 2
Begin customizing your adoption plan. Start making important decisions for your adoption plan – like how open you want your adoption to be.
- 3
View waiting adoptive family profiles. Adoption Advocates works with families of all religions, races and sexual orientations, so you can choose the family that feels right to you.
- 4
Deliver your baby. Sometimes things change once your baby is in your arms. You’ll meet with your specialist again to process your feelings before making a final decision about adoption.
- 5
Sign relinquishment paperwork. In Texas, this can be done no sooner than 48 hours after delivery, but you can have more time if you need it.
- 6Receive ongoing support Your adoption specialist will continue to provide post-placement grief counseling for as long as you need.
How an Adoption Agency Can Help
ADVICE FROM A BIRTH MOTHER
No matter where the baby ends up, people will often feel obligated to tell you to do what they feel is right or what you “should” do. Only you know what is right for you, and what’s right for what’s growing inside you.

Adoption FAQs for Expectant Parents
Parents who adopt from Adoption Advocates are educated to respect the special bond between the child and the birth family. By knowing you and receiving information from you, they can raise the child that knows where they came from. Although open adoption agreements are not legally enforceable in Texas, chances are that you will choose a family who you like and trust, and they will be committed to honoring their agreement with you.
No one can make you sign the adoption papers, however if you still feel that adoption is the best decision for your child, you may sign no sooner than 48 hours after birth per Texas law.
If you have chosen an adoptive family prior to delivery, the baby can be placed in his/her new home immediately following your completion of the relinquishment document. You must wait at least 48 hours after delivery to sign the relinquishment document.
Adoptive parents have been pre-screened through comprehensive process that includes background checks, interviews and a home study. They must also meet the following qualifications:
- Unable to have biological children due to infertility or high-risk hereditary concerns
- Must be emotionally and financially stable
- Flexible about such issues as ethnicity and health history
- Willing to commit to open adoption
Adoption Advocates believes in building families of all types, and we work with adoptive families representing a range of ethnicities, religions and sexual orientations.
