Back in October, my husband Keith and I found out his vasectomy had failed and I was pregnant with our 5th child. We knew we had to make the best decision for this baby, so after looking deeply into our situation we chose an open adoption.

We went online and found Adoption Advocates in Austin, an amazing agency which we have developed some great friendships & support from.

We looked at the families and almost immediately I knew who I wanted to care and love our baby. The family was contacted with the news that they were chosen and little did I know, I just gained an extended family from that point on.

They went with me to almost every doctor’s appointment, texted frequently and also accepted my kids into our new relationship… All of this blew me away. I didn’t expect all of this to happen with my choice.

On Monday, May 17 at 5:36pm, Lillie Jean was born weighing 7lbs 14oz and 20in long. On Wednesday, she went home.

While this was the hardest decision of my life and I still struggle, I don’t regret my decision at all.

The family is so dedicated to her that they come from Austin every weekend to pick up momma’s milk for her and I get to see her every other weekend (How awesome is that!).

While going into this process is scary because you don’t really know the outcome (on both sides), I really got lucky with some amazing people and they will never know how grateful I am for them.

A closed adoption isn’t the only option and the very few people I have told of our story immediately think of just the closed adoption, so when I explain our open adoption story (so far) they’re really surprised.
