Many people’s framework of adoption is what they’ve seen on TV, in movies, or heard about second-hand. However the reality of adoption – especially in 2023 – is often quite different. If you’re new to learning about adoption, you may have seen that many adoption agencies in Texas offer “modern adoption plans” for expectant parents… but what does that mean?

What is an Adoption Plan?

An adoption plan is a detailed series of choices made about the adoption process as well as plans for the baby’s future.

“A modern adoption plan is different from past adoptions because it puts expectant parents in control of the adoption process, and empowers them to make decisions that feel right to them.”

What Makes an “Modern” Adoption Plan Different?

Adoptions in the past were shrouded in secrecy and shame. With few options for an unplanned pregnancy, women were frequently coerced into placing their baby with an adoptive family. Adoptions were closed; birth mothers never saw their children again and did not know who was raising their child. Adoptive parents knew little to nothing about the birth parent’s circumstances, medical histories, heritage or other relatives. Adoption was often kept a secret from the adoptee themselves. For adoptees who were aware of the adoption, they often grew up feeling disconnected with many questions about their origins.

Today’s adoptions are very different. The majority of domestic infant adoptions now are open adoptions. In an open adoption, the birth parents and adoptive parents exchange identifying information and build a relationship. Many open adoptions involve ongoing communication via email, text, phone and social media. Some open adoptions are especially close, with birth parents visiting regularly and being present for birthdays and holidays.

A modern adoption plan is different from past adoptions because it puts expectant parents in control of the adoption process, and empowers them to make decisions that feel right to them. Most modern adoption plans also emphasis building relationships based on trust and respect between all involved in the adoption, which research shows benefits everyone.

What Choices Can I Make?

Modern adoption plans are all about putting you in control of the choices you make for you and your baby’s future. We believe that you are the only one that knows what’s best for you; our role is to help you put those choices into action.

Here are just a few of the choices you’ll be able to make in a modern adoption plan:

  • Who will raise your child
  • What level of openness and post-placement contact you’d like
  • What name goes on your child’s original birth certificate
  • Who is present at the hospital during and after delivery
  • How much time you spend with the baby after the birth

It’s important to keep in mind that you adoption plan is just a plan – not a commitment. As with most things, plans sometimes change – especially as you draw closer to your due date. Sometimes that looks like wanting more openness with the adoptive family you’ve chosen. Sometimes that means deciding that adoption is not right for you. We support your right to make changes and will do what we can to help.

How Do I Start Making an Adoption Plan?

The first step in making an adoption plan is to find the best adoption agency for you. Most adoption agencies in Texas are committed to offering modern, open adoptions – so you’ll have plenty to choose from.
