If your pregnancy came as a surprise, it is important to take some time to process the news. You have some big decisions ahead of you, but here are some things to do before you begin considering your options.

1. Confirm your pregnancy

If you have not already done so, make an appointment with a healthcare provider to confirm your pregnancy and discuss your options. If you are uninsured or don’t have a provider, pregnancy centers can provide a free pregnancy test or ultrasound. Make sure to request a copy of your test results as you may need these for proof of pregnancy later.

2. Sign up for Pregnancy Medicaid, if you do not have health insurance

Pregnancy Medicaid will cover your prenatal checkups and vitamins as well as labor and delivery costs. In Texas, you’ll need to be a resident, a US citizen, and meet income requirements.

3. Establish prenatal care

Regular doctor visits throughout your pregnancy will keep both you and your baby healthy. Your doctor can also work with you to establish healthy habits, like taking prenatal vitamins and eating a healthy diet. Routine medical visits are especially important if you have pre-existing conditions, a history of complicated pregnancies or are struggling with substance use.

4. Seek support

Talk to someone you trust about your surprise pregnancy, whether it’s your partner, a friend, family member, or healthcare provider. There are also many resources available to provide support and information, such as pregnancy counseling services, support groups, and hotlines.

5. Consider your options

With current laws in Texas, your options for an unplanned pregnancy are parenting or placing the child for adoption. This can feel like an overwhelming decision when parenting wasn’t in your immediate plans, but you have time to weigh each option and make the choice that is best for you.
